What should I look for when buying a table saw? Detailed Buying Guide

Various factors influence the purchase of a new table saw. This detailed buying guide will help you understand your needs, allowing you to make the right choice when it comes to making your purchase.

Motor Power and Drive

Motors drive the blade to cut through the material at high speeds. The power of your motor determines the variety and thickness of materials you can cut through.

Most saws have a wired source of power, which may reduce the portability. However, newer wireless models may not have longer run times, as well as smaller blades to work with to reduce power consumption.

The type of drive in your motor can also have a major impact on the output power of your saw. Motors are broadly classified into two types, direct drive, and belt drive.

Direct Drive

Direct drive motors are designed such that the motor directly drives the motion of the blade. While this makes it an ideal choice for the portable type of saws, they can be very noisy. Direct drive motors provide power outputs of upto 2 hp, which is ideal for home use and basic requirements

Belt Drive

Belt drives utilize a belt to connect the blade to the motor. They are ideal for those with a professional requirement that requires increased power output. Belt drive motors are capable of power outputs between 3 and 7.5 hp, depending on the phase setting chosen.

They are also much quieter thanks to the use of an induction motor. With an offset allowing you to prevent dust accumulation, belt drives offer better durability over the long run.

  • Basic Product Features

The most basic elements of a table saw are the blade, the fence, and the miter gauge. These three components play an important role in ensuring that you have a clean and accurate cut.

Blade

The major specifications one must check out while choosing the blade include the speed, number of teeth, the material used to make it, and so on. In my personal view, here are the three most important factors that will help you choose your blade.

  • Number of teeth – A blade that has more teeth will be able to cut more smoothly, however taking more time in doing so. A blade with a lesser number of teeth will cut faster, as there is more room for wood chips to be ejected. The finish on these blades will be rough though as a result
  • Blade materials – Blades are made of steel or carbon steel for maximum strength, while tungsten carbide is the primary choice for the teeth. Some teeth are even diamond dipped for more strength while cutting. The material of the blade and its teeth will determine the type of materials you can cut as well as the smoothness of the finish.
  • Blade diameter – This factor helps you determine the size of the workpieces you can cut through. While standard blades for woodwork range between 8” to 12”, blades can go upto 30” for different applications. It is important to ensure the diameter of the blade is compatible with the arbor of the saw to ensure safe operation.

Fence

The fence is the parallel cutting guide that helps you cut through the workpiece accurately. The fence of your saw is crucial in determining the maximum length of the rip cut you can make on your saw.

— Also read: What can a Miter Saw do that a Table Saw Can’t?

A fence must be straight and smooth to ensure that your cut is clean. The fence must also not compromise on the stability of the workpiece, ensuring it is locked in firmly during the sawing operation.

Miter Gauge

The miter gauge is crucial for angled and bevel cuts on a table saw. The gauge allows for the blade to be inclined with respect to the workplace, allowing users to make inclined cuts in their workpiece. The miter gauge must be accurate and stable to ensure that the cut made is precise and even throughout the workpiece.

  • Safety Features

Power tools are dangerous to operate, with the potential to cause severe injury, which can even prove to be fatal. It is important to ensure that the product of your choice has good safety features that ensure the operator is safe at all times from the blade as well as flying workpieces.

The main safety features incorporated by most manufacturers are riving knives or splitters, magnetic switches, anti-kickback pawls, and push sticks.

Riving knife and splitter

A riving knife is located right behind the blade. This knife is adjustable and removable, making it convenient to use depending on the application. The riving knife prevents the piece from caving in and causing the blade to kick back, which could send the workpiece flying in your direction or damage the blade and motor.

A riving knife is also adjustable, allowing you to ensure the gap is not too much between the spinning blade and the knife itself, minimizing the possibility of kickbacks.

Splitters on the other hand are fixed at the back end of the blade. They cannot be adjusted so can cause kickbacks when the blade height is reduced. At the optimum height, they are capable enough to prevent that from happening.

Magnetic switch

Magnetic switches are important if you are at a location that faces frequent power outages. It automatically triggers your saw into the off mode, ensuring that the saw does not accidentally come back to life when the power resumes.

This helps avoid accidents as one may be close to the blade or a workpiece might be improperly positioned near the blade at that instant.

Anti-kickback pawls

Anti-kickback pawls are important to prevent workpieces from flying back at the user in the occurrence of a kickback. Located at the end of the blade, this accessory is equipped with teeth that catch any material that has been dislodged and lifted into the air due to the kickback.

It ensures the one-way motion of the workpiece away from the blade to ensure maximum user safety while operating the saw.

Push stick

This is a simple safety accessory that helps the user keep their hands away from the spinning blade at all points of time. The stick helps you push the workpiece across the blade, ensuring a smooth cut without risking your hands.

The push stick can also play a vital role in controlling the speed while moving the workpiece, and ensure that the piece is pinned against the fence to ensure a uniform and precise cut at all points of time.

Different Types of Saws

The type of saw is the most important choice that one has to make when it comes to buying a new table saw. This aspect of the purchase encapsulates all of the above-mentioned points, based on which you will fully understand your requirement.

The two main types of table saws are Portable and Stationary. They are further classified based on weight, functionality, and design.

Portable Saws

Portable saws are lightweight and easy to transport, making them ideal for users looking to carry around their saw to various job sites. However, this portability comes at the expense of larger working areas as well as the precision that larger fixed products offer. Portable saws are further classified into the following.

Benchtop

These are the smallest types of table saws available in the market. They are small enough that one can place them on a bench or table. These types of saws are best for amateurs venturing into the fields of woodworking and DIY products. These products however do not come with a stand of their own.

Compact

Compact saws are slightly larger and sturdier than their benchtop counterparts. This model is designed for amateurs as well as tradesmen with a professional requirement. The major advantage of a compact saw is that it is compatible with a stand, allowing for improved stability during rip cuts.

Jobsite

Jobsite saws are the largest type of portable table saw available in the market. These types of saws are ideal for tradesmen with a regular need of using their saw at multiple locations. The provision of wheels on the stand ensures that they are easily movable within a job site.

Heavy-duty mechanisms ensure the product does a good job at cutting tougher materials, while also making it more robust and durable over the long run. While some may confuse it with a contractor saw, remember that job site saws are lighter and portable.

Stationary Saws

As the name says, these saws are meant for use in a fixed place. This is thanks to their increased weight and working area, which allows a user more functionality while using the saw.

These saws are also provided with tools and other equipment meant to cater to a wider requirement of cuts. These stationary saws are further classified into the following.

Contractor

Contractor saws are the smallest type of stationary saws available in the market. These saws are lighter than the larger cabinet saws but were initially created with portability in mind. However, newer portable designs have condemned them to become fixed versions.

Contractor saws nowadays come with wheels and quieter induction motors that offer you more power, improved stability, and durability, while allowing you to move it around when necessary.

Hybrid

Hybrid saws combine the best of a contractor and cabinet saw. They offer motor sizes similar to that of a contractor saw but have a trunnion assembly from the bottom, which is slightly harder to adjust unlike a cabinet saw.

Some hybrid saws combine the open leg table design, allowing the operator to collect dust better, making it a great choice for indoor cutting. One also gets the added advantage of precision and accuracy thanks to the improved accessory compatibility.

Cabinet

Cabinet saws are the heaviest table saws, that are best suited for full-time professional woodworkers looking for the ultimate precision and performance. They are built of cast iron and steel, making them durable and long-lasting.

They are capable of cutting through almost any material and making any type of cut you want. The added advantage of this type of saw is the multiple upgrades you can make depending on your requirement.

While you have the absolute best when it comes to cutting and dust collection, you sacrifice on the portability and will have to spend quite a lot of money to own one.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Do I Really need a table saw?

If you are someone looking to improve the efficiency of the cutting process while having your machine offer you a plethora of features and cut types, then I would recommend that you purchase a table saw.

A table saw is the trusted power tool of woodworkers, furniture makers, and cabinet makers because of these very same reasons. It is also possible to make several modifications as well as upgrades, helping you design the perfect work set up according to your requirements.

If you are an amateur or looking to start with making your furniture, you do not necessarily need a table saw. However, having one will make it easy for you to learn the basics of using power tools, which will help you get accustomed much faster.

The reasons why you may not want to purchase a table saw in such situations is because of a lack of space, budget, or a rare requirement for such high cutting volumes.

Important Table Saw Accessories

  • Accessories and Extra Options

While your table saw may not come with many default accessories, it is a great idea to check the compatibility of your saw with such accessories before making a purchase. This will help you understand if you can make upgrades to your current model as your requirements evolve.

The major accessories that I would recommend you to take a look at are a saw stand, a dust chute, and a table extension. These will be pivotal to increase the portability, hygiene of your work area, and functionality. Other accessories that you can look to purchase can include a miter gauge, anti-friction spray, dado blade pack, and a personal safety kit.

Stands

Stands are pivotal for two main reasons. The first one is the portability aspect. If your stand has wheels, it can be moved around fairly easily at a job site, to ensure you can perform the cutting operation where you need to. This may still require the effort of more than one person, depending on the weight of your table saw.

The second reason a stand is crucial is to offer stability during the cutting process. If your stand wobbles when the machine is in operation, it could result in an imprecise cut, or even cause severe injury if any of the body parts come in contact with the running blade due to unexpected movement.

Dust Chute

Dust chutes are essential for those working in closed spaces and confined areas, where there is not enough ventilation for the dust to move away from the saw. This can result in difficulty in breathing, as well as an increased chance of wood chips getting trapped within the saw.

A dust chute connected to the vacuum dust remover can ensure that your dust is collected in a single place. This ensures that you can collect and dispose of it without any hassles after using the machine.

Table Extensions

Table extensions are important for those looking to increase the work area and the versatility of their machine. Doing so will allow you to cut through larger materials and make longer rip cuts while ensuring that your work surface is stable for the best results.

Miter Gauge

Default miter gauges are not the most accurate and are primarily analog. If you are someone looking to make angled and bevel cuts regularly, with a higher need for precision, then it is ideal that you purchase a digital miter gauge with magnetic attachments.

These models attach to the blade and make for precise angle adjustments, making the process hassle-free.

Anti-friction spray

Anti-friction spray is crucial to ensure that your piece moves across the table smoothly. While making the process efficient, the spray also ensures that you do not burn the workpiece or stall it on the blade, which could cause a kickback.

The spray also protects the surface of the table from being scraped away, ensuring durability and better accuracy over the long run.

Dado Blade Pack

A dado blade pack is ideal for professional woodworkers and cabinet makers looking to make rabbets, dados, and slots in the workpiece. This will help you save a lot of time and get a great quality of finish as well. However, one must check the table saw for compatibility with the dado blade model before making a purchase.

Personal Safety Set

No matter how many safety features are incorporated into your table saw, you can never know when the next freak accident is waiting to happen. Thus, it is best to take protective measures personally.

A personal safety kit consists of a helmet and goggles to protect the user from flying debris. You can also add a face mask if the sawdust affects your ability to breathe.

When it comes to handling the workpiece, safety kits include push sticks and push blocks that help you grip and move the piece across the blade without risking injury to your hand. Push clocks are equipped with foam to ensure you have a good grip on the piece, ensuring it does not slip while being moved across.
